What is the reason for the "4 characters+" search?

Although many of us are not happy with the 4+ character search limitation, it appears that the powers of this board are now just ignoring our complaints and we are just crying in the wind. It is very disappointing, but I guess it is not big enough of a problem (compated to avatars, for example) for anyone else to care. AquilaEagle, thank you for posting to this thread, even though you could not help us.

Although I agree that 3 letter searches are great, especially for a car forum... a lot of forum software does not allow a 3 letter search because it taxes the databases extremely hard...

this site would become substantially slower.

maybe not bmw but maybe s2k

However it also seems that searching is less effective. It used to be that "s2000 header" would be interpreted as "s2000 AND header", now it seems that the default behavior is "s2000 OR header"

The difference being that "s2000 AND header" will give me all posts with both s2000 and header in it, while "s2000 OR header" will give me all the posts with either s2000 or header in it(which is not what I want)
put + in front of your search terms to change it to AND

All forum software uses OR as the default, only vbb is different (which is what v3 s2ki used) so try:

+s2000 +header

I agree 100%.

How about "XM" or "amp" ???

One of the highest values of this board is the reservoir of information contained in previous posts (and the collective knowledge of the participants). The search function should be better.

I would place it as a higher priority.

My sentiments exactly. Any forum without a decent search function is pointless. I use Autopia regularly and it is one of the best forums to find the info you want quickly. On s2ki I can type in the title thread which belongs to me and still not find it! I am not intending to renew my membership until this most critical bit of functionality is resolved.

This is not "rahul"

And I won't even mention "BMW" or "SLK" or "CAI" or "TSB" or a thousand other useful abbreviations. But seriously, I'd like to know how to search for "hub nut". This is a real question because I cannot find the posts that discussed the fix. The other real search that I wanted to do is "oil jet bolt". Thank you.
