Default What is the reason for the "4 characters+" search?

I was trying to find some threads on "hub nut" and for the life of me, I could not do any search on those terms. I tried individual words (with the "+" prefix) and I tried quoting the two words together, but none of them work. So,
(1) What is the reason behind the "4-characters+" search rule?
(2) Any suggestions on how to search for "hub nut" specifically?
(3) Any suggestions on how to search for "slk", or "nsx", or "bmw", or thousands of 3-characters terms? Many of these 3-character terms are extremely interesting and useful as a search term.

Thanks.

I want to search for all posts containing AEM EMS but cannot due to the four letter minimum rule. Any suggestions?

It was something technical to do with databases. I thought c3 was going to change it, but it would need re-indexing, which takes ages.

sorry i can't be of more help.

Why the would you want to look up bmw?

Does that mean it is hopeless trying to find useful information on this board? This board used to be so useful, now I find it frustrating trying to help others find the information they are looking for (I was looking "hub nut" because someone asked about the "clunk" in the back when starting out). It seems we have a lot of good information on this board that we can no longer get to, and people are doomed to ask the same questions again and again and again and we cannot help them find the answers.

As for why I want to look up "bmw", I was hoping to find information on the "M6", but that being only 2-characters, I know my chance is nil, so by looking up all the "bmw" posts, I was hoping to narrow it down a little. But alas, even at 3-characters, I cannot search for "bmw".

This is why someone may want to search for "BMW":

Any hope of getting this fixed?

x 10

The lack of a 3 letter search has made the site a lot less useful than it used to be. I REALLY hope that it can be brought back.

maybe not bmw but maybe s2k

However it also seems that searching is less effective. It used to be that "s2000 header" would be interpreted as "s2000 AND header", now it seems that the default behavior is "s2000 OR header"

The difference being that "s2000 AND header" will give me all posts with both s2000 and header in it, while "s2000 OR header" will give me all the posts with either s2000 or header in it(which is not what I want)
