The bottom one I just had on P, it determined the length of exposure by itself, and I'm sure that's the same deal with the top one. Camera is just trying to suck in enough light.

Just use a tripod with your camera, set the timer, click and let it take the picture. Depending on the light, the camera will adjust itself to get the best image and you can take it from there into Photoshop to brighten it, play with it, etc...of if you use your buddies camera, you can either use P mode (easier) or mess around in M mode.
