You can learn 3ds Max at Miami-Dade (or you used to be able to, as I used to, as my business partner used to teach it there). See if they have non-credit classes you can take (cheaper) since you won't need it for a degree. It's usually found under the architecture department.
I think the argument between Maya/Max is just that each has its pros and cons. Use whichever package best suits your needs. I do architecture 3D renderings/animations so Max suits me well. I have used Maya, Rhino3D, SketchUP, Revit, and some others.
