robbinsville, nc is where I stay when I go to the dragon, it's about 15 minutes away from the dragon. according to google maps it's a 13 hour drive from there to miami and that sounds about right after getting gas a few times and stopping for food. I always drive straight up and then make the return a 2 day trip, I've got more energy at the start 
I usually cruise at 15mph over whatever the limit is on the road, nothing too crazy. not sure what route I take back, I just listen to the navi
$800-$1,000 is pretty nuts for the trip if you ask me, especially now that gas is in the $2 range and not $4.25 like last year. for me last year I stayed at the microtel in robbinsville, $100 a night split between a couple of people, after that it's just gas and food. it's about a 2,200 mile round trip for me since I go to raleigh,nc first to meet some people then drive across the blue ridge parkway to get to the dragon, the blue ridge is almost as much fun as the dragon that's still under $200 in gas this year figuring a conservative 25mpg. I'll probably be around $400 by the end of the trip after gas, share of hotel, and food, way better than last year just because of gas last year I was probably in the $500-$600 range since gas was double.

BTW, which area are you guys planning on staying at? Where is Di's cabin at?

I know one year we stayed in 469 in the corner and the previous year we were by 745 or 747 by the pond.
