Default Advice Needed

Okay, so some moron (in a minivan) hit me today in a parking lot....

We went to the collision reporting centre and the police said that we didn't need to file a report because there is less than $1000 damage...so we exchanged information (ie. DL, insurance, etc) and I also have some names of witnesses who had seen what happened and offered me their names and phone #'s...

So do I call my insurance company right away? Am I going to get screwed no matter what with my premiums? What should I be doing here??

Thanks in advance,
a much frustrated,
Lesley

Call your insurance company right away. If it was not your fault, your premiums will not increase because the moron's insurance company will be paying for the repairs.

Edit: sorry for your misfortune.

Yeah, I wouldnt loose any sleep over it, but I WOULD have the cops file a report because that will be your only proof that you are not at any fault (I believe). Simply telling your insurance company that it was the other persons fault may not enable them to seek repayment (again, I believe).

Accidents happen. Sounds like yours was small. Thats good

Don't worry too much. We have no fault, but insurance does take that into consideration when it comes to raising premiums. You're close to the major discount anyway.

Call insurance asap and report it. You don't have to make a claim but you always must report it because the other "moron" probably will and he has your information.

Just look at this and you'll realize its "not as bad as yours (mine)" heheheheh

Les, do not call the insurance right away!!

If you can get this guy to pay for the $1000 damage to your car, do that. If he refuses to pay for it, then obviously call the insurance. Remember, insurance companies look at at fault claims but they also look at the number of claims made. Since you had a recent claim, i would try to seek a better option. I'm sure the guy would want to give you cash because his insurance would go up for sure and $1000 is not that much.

Good luck!

If its not more than 1000 and it was not your fault..DO NOT CALL YOUR INSURANCE CO...and make sure the other person does not call his/hers either. Regardless if you are not at fault, a claim is a claim is a claim is a claim...A friend of mine works for Traders General and this is some sound advice he gives me. Regardless, if your insurance finds out and you or the other party files a claim your premiums may go up. The best thing to do is to settle the matter without the insurance getting involved.

Good Luck

No Doug, it was the winter beater - THank God!

I'm still perplexed here....My mom said the same thing...see if the guy wants to pay cash for the damages first. He told me when we were at the collision reporting centre that he was not going to make a claim with his insurance company for his damages (his van has tonnes of bumps and scratches all over)...but we did not discuss his paying me cash to fix my car? I only have his insurance info and his address, no phone #...

so should I look up his phone # and call him and ask if that is what he'd like to do?

Thanks again for all your advice....keep it coming please!

Yeah, no fault is not really no fault. It's your fault. Even if you get hit by someone else and make a claim, it's still a claim. It goes on your record and may come back to haunt you.

No fault is a total and utter joke.

They just made no fault up so they don't have to determine which insurance company is paying for ALL of the damages. Now your insurance pays for the damages to your car no matter whose fault it is. BUT if the other party was clearly at fault they will waive your deductible like in my situation.
