Default Cable vs. DSL question

or in other words Rogers vs. Sympatico

out of you GTA users, what do you have and why ?

I'm a long time rogers user and was thinking of making the switch to Bell's DSL as I like having the feature of dial up just in case the Hi-Speed goes south on me. (as what recently happend with Rogers) as Rogers does not provide that.

thanks for your input

Rogers does provide a dialup account. Check the rogers support web site.

If you don't upload much, DSL is good. If you upload a fair bit, stick with CABLE.

One other thing you may want to check out.

Ive recently got the network adapter for my PS2. In order to get that thing working on Rogers, which I have, Im also going to need a router. Now, I need a wireless router because my computer is nowhere near the TV the PS2 is on (which is an additional cost of about $160, no big deal, but could make one more attractive versus the other.

I wonder how Bell handels PS2s. Do they also require a router?

You don't need a router - you could also get a 2nd IP address for $10/month from Rogers.

Both services are the same in that respect. To connect multiple devices, you will need a router *or* multiple IP's from the service provider.

If you really wanted to cheap out, you could use Internet Sharing in Windows 2000/XP or some other proxy server software with DHCP capability.

Both services are not the same. With Sympatico your PS2 must support PPPoE.

I wouldn't use a splitter because there would be too much signal loss. Even if you have a high quality splitter (i.e. >3.0dB signal loss), normal TV cable wire is not shielded enough for reliable internet service delivery.

You can get 15dB signal amps, (I have one at home for co-axial cable) and other goodies to bump up speed and reliability. I am getting approx. 250kb/sec avg - 450kb/sec peak using a +15dB signal amp and shielded cable with -2.5dB splitters.

Just get a router - they're cheap. I bought my ASANTE router for $129.

In context please...

*sigh*

With Sympatico, you will have to use a router or Internet Sharing and your PS2 will not have to support PPPoE.
