Default Cheapest place to buy spare key for ap2?

Hi all,

I just recently bought a 2005 s2k and it only came with 1 key. I'm scared I might lose it. So I'd prefer to get a spare just in case. Does anyone know where the cheapest place is to get one in Toronto? I don't want to go to Honda and pay over $200 for a key that I may never need to use. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

+1 ! Mine came with one key too .. although I lowered the price accordingly. So far Ive locked myself out once but I have a CAA membership and they make quick work of opening the door usually.

The only option you have is going to Honda.

All Honda's after the year 2000 have an immobilizer in the ECU that requires a signal from the key in order to start the car and keep it running. If you have a $5 key cut and try to start the car with it, the car will shut off after ~15 seconds and the ECU will need to be reprogrammed.

Unless you just get the key cut and only use it to unlock the doors and truck, you'll be fine doing that.

there's lots of non-dealer places that can cut a 2005 key for you without the $200 price tag

i imagine even the dealer isnt that much though if you just want a normal key (not the nice silver key)

Wouldn't you still need the chip programmed?

I called a place today they said it would cost $150 plus tax for the key, cut and programmed. Is there anywhere that can do it cheaper?

You're paying for the OEM part which is about 80 dollars and an hour of shop time which is about 80-95 dollars. Doubt you will find it anywhere cheap, and ive never heard of anyone besides a dealership being able to do it.

you can buy a genuine oem blank key online for $30. I bought one when i first got the car thinking i would lose the original key by now, still have it and the blank is sitting in my room.

edit: opps didnt see you have an ap2. I believe they are alot more expensive than ap1s. infact i dont think you can get it online for much cheaper than the dealer. ap1 blanks can be had for next to nothing.

I found a blank key on ebay that should work for AP2. My car is originally from the united states.

If this key will work I will need to find a shop that will cut and program the key for me.
