If you'll notice in that list of items in the kit, the Maxi-pad is the only large, absorbant material. We carry something similar in our firetruck trauma kit, but ours is much bigger. We call ours "abdomenal pads". In some situations, a highly absorbant material is needed to stop massive bleeding or loss of bodily contents. A Maxi-pad is actually a pretty good option for civilian use.
