My car makes the same clunking noise. I think it helps when you put the clutch down for 1-2 seconds before putting it into 1st gear... i find it'll only make that noise when i push the clutch down and then put it in 1st gear right away.

Hey do you guys feel the clunk as well as hear it? It happens to my car from time to time, but I always thought it was coming from the rear differential. It's like the pinion is taking up the slack on the ring gear.

Does this make sense XViper?
Makes sense. I've alluded to this in the past. Throughout your drivetrain, there are gaps between teeth, between cogs, etc. You have gaps between the teeth from one shaft to another in your tranny. You have gaps between the pinion and ring gear teeth. You have gaps in the CV joints in the 1/2 shafts and in the joints of the prop shaft. When you load and unload the powertrain, depending on where the biggest slack is, when these gaps close, this is where the noise comes from. It can be the tranny, the rear diff, etc.
Remember that when you are in neutral, clutch up, engine running, you are spinning the tranny. If you select a gear quickly, before the tranny has a couple of seconds to spin down, as soon as you select that gear, you slam the spinning tranny to a grinding halt. That inertia gets transmitted all down the powertrain. Selecting a higher gear (2nd and higher), this inertia is absorbed better by the syncros and by the ratio themselves and doesn't transmit nearly as much shock down the line.

The clunking in reverse is normal on 00-03 S2k's. It happends when you release the clutch too quickly. Its more sensitive in reverse. Ive learned to slowly engage the clutch when reversing. I dont get the clunk.

As for the buzzing, your car is a 2000. There is a TSB if you are still under warranty.
