The root cause of blue smoke would be hard to fix itself, unless you did an oil change and that was just enough to make a difference. Hope it stays away for you.

I was driving behind an old british sports car this weekend and it blew out blue smoke at each stoplight just as it turned green and he was taking off. Smelled like burning oil and definitely blue. It was a pretty big puff, but cleared up while he was driving.

I had just done an oil change prior to the original post and only had about 250kms on the fresh oil. I replaced the PCV valve about a week after the post but the little puff was still there.

You may be right about the oil change though, maybe the "liquid gold" softened the guide seals enough over time to close the gap? The car still consumes a little oil like all AP1's but the car is also 13 years old. Love this oil so far and going to stick with it.

LOL, all British cars blow smoke!

Penzoil Platinum 5W-30, made from natural gas(as stated on the jug!) but not my natural gas.

Pretty decent oil for over the counter availability, hope it continues to work well. Quite often with fresh oil the lighter components burn off first and then the viscosity stabilizes. The anti-wear additives also bond to the metals after a bit of use.

Blue smoke on start up/after idle = valve seals.

Blue smoke when you're WOT = piston rings.

My AP1 does it from time to time and I can't be bothered by it to be honest.

That oil is too thin. The s2000 manual recommends 10w30 and 5w40.

How can 5W30 be too thin? It is still a 30 weight oil at 100 Degrees C, granted it is thinner when the oil is much colder. Also, the manual recommends conventional oil and synthetic as an option.

Look at the viscosity at 90c. A 5w30 has a lower viscosity at operating temp than a 10w30. Just because it says w30 doesn't mean all oils are the same.

Thanks Nick, had to do more research.

Very good read.
