Do you really see a difference between using amps and a processor vs a reciever? I don't.... there is nothing to control on the amps, they turn on and work. Using the processor is now like using a reciever....
My Rotel selection includes separates. At what I would consider a reasonable cost/value ratio.

Granted, I'm speaking more in generalizations, I realize that a power amp and pre are basically as easy to use.
As for something new, how much more then 7 channels is someone going to need anytime soon?

marco,
here's my receiver....and i checked the back 7 pre-outs....
http://esupport.sony.com/perl/model-...l?mdl=STRDB940
only question is, can i use this and get an amp, or would you guys recommend a NEW pre-amp AND amp...keeping in mind that i ALREADY have this receiver.
i don't mind paying for a new amp.....but i'd like to utilize this if possible....it's not as though it's from future shop.

Yea keep that Nimesh. Add a good amp to it, that will allow you to utilize more power hungry speakers, if you wish. You will also notice a improvement in sound quality. Look at the Rotel amps. Very good build quality at a reasonable price.

Yup - has pre amp out for 5.1...still not sure what your goal is. We need to talk about it more as you could be spending some serious $ and I don't want you to feel unhappy or unsure about what you get/doing - are you in a hurry?
Mike - I mean new encryption methods...ie DD, DTS, DPLII etc.
Some processor are upgradeable some are not, but even if the processor is not upgradeable, your don't have $ wasted in the amplifier section of the reciever when you upgrade your processor.
You do have wasted $ in the reciever upgrade and your getting lessor amplification - just my 2 cents....
I went the reciever route - won't do it again....
Oh and Canada is kickin' a$$ and talkin' name !

goal is an HT set-up for the FR....with a view to moving it into the basement in a few years when i do the basement....
this time, i'm not gonna finish it for the sake of doing it....i'm gonna take my time, get a designer etc...if i have to wait to afford it to do it right, i will.
i want to invest ONCE in good speakers, good amp and add onto it once it moves downstairs....if this means adding a pre-amp, good DVD, good CD, more speakers, etc. that's fine.
i'll still have the sony receiver for upstairs and i already have a full 5.1 M&K set-up (incl. sub) that i'll break out at that time for upstairs....it'll be good enough for everyday use (if we even use it).
i still need to put aside $ for a tv for the FR immediately on move-in...at least a 50" plasma or LCD....wall mounted if i can afford it.
i'm looking to you guys that know about this stuff for guidance as it's a big investment (at least for me)....thanks.
