i don't agree with it, but again, i'm not a truck user, so i wouldn't know what "truck-bed" protocol is.

all i'm saying is that if *most* trucks that have tonneau covers, that do not lock *properly/as securely* as a say the door, then i can see honda not thinking much about it.....
Adding a locking tailgate as standard equipment was something that started a number of years ago, in fact I even remember it being advertised as a way to keep someone from stealing the tailgate because they just lift right out of their hinges so you can load heavy stuff into the bed and not have it in the way.

However, now it seems the "4-door" pickup is fighting hard to cut into the SUV sales figures, people are seeing a truck bed and the ability to seat 5 to 6 people is a great alternative. This I believe is where the locking tailgate really comes in. The fiberglass tonneau covers and others that are not canvas/vinyl secure very well, and with their locks in combination to the locking tailgate and you end up with a very nice big locking compartment.

VersaCover - what I'm going with

ARE - a very popular fiberglass design

J, I'm going with the Undercover by VersaCover. It is not the most beautiful thing, but it is the most durable and water tight. The whole thing is formed out of one huge piece of formed plastic. The silly things weighs only 40 to 50 pounds, and yet it is strong enough to stand on. And because it is plastic does not really lend itself to scratches like a painted fiberglass one. The cool thing they have designed it so it mounts using the Utility Trac System than I'm getting so when I take it off to use the Softopper there will be no hardware left behind.

Well in about 2010 when I buy another track car the S's replacement must be a hardtop, so they got 5 years to make it longer, lower, less frumpy and lighter... and I'm sad to say I don't see that happening.

The ARE "does" look nice.

It's not too heavy but it's just the craftsmanship that's not so great. The locking mechanism is having issues, the bump stops never stay put, the pads to protect the hydraulic arms from hitting the underside keep falling off.

All these little things would make me look at another brand.

As an FYI, I put an ARE CH Fiberglass cap on my '86.5 Hardbody. I put an ARE CX on my Dad's '97 Dakota and I put an ARE CX on my '95 Hardbody. They were all a good value when I bought them, however, they proved to not have what it takes to stand the test of time; so believe me, I understand, they are in part responsible for me deciding to not do a cap this time.
