Well if no rubbing on the inner fender the only thing I can think of is you rubbed the tire up along side of someting. But did you not say the groove was growing, not just a one time thing?

If a tire rubs on a fender and the proper tires/wheels are being used and the suspension and suspension settings are within stock settings there is no way in hell there should be tire rub. I don't care if it is an off-road truck experiencing maximum suspension travel or a performance car cornering hard.

Jarek, I've noticed when I rub with my 18's it's usually on the platic part of the rear fender lining (behind the wheel) not the top rubber part. Feel along the whole wheel well/fender lining area not just the top...

correct.
on my old car, the rear bumper (@ wheel well opening) was worn out on the drivers side from my various spring experiements.
and i little bit on the passenger side...not much though.
