Default travel advice for an Englishman in Canada

Hi guys, i'm visiting Canada in July and leaving via NY in early August. We fly into Montreal to visit friends but the in between bit is as yet unplanned. Anything I really should not miss?

Plan is a few days in Toronto at least.... other than that..

cheers in advance.

Lots to do in TO...

Niagara Falls is only a couple hours drive away...be sure to stop in at Niagara on the Lake - many nice bed and breakfasts there...

What kind of stuff are you looking to do in Montreal? There is a gamut of things to do. The Montreal Jazz Festival has just started http://www.montrealjazzfest.com/

Bug spray, you need it. Other than that it depends on what you like to do. Fishing, hiking, camping, boating, eating, drinking, golf, whatever you want so long as you have the first thing it's all good.

What sort of things do you like to do and is there anything you've heard you might want to do that we can give you advice on?

Stay away from the people in the Toronto Forum...they'll corrupt your morals.

umm.. i fancy a bit of gentle canoeing.. where is good for that? (everywhere? )

i will get bug spray galore then.. although they seem to prefer my missus (suits me )

we'll be doing a bit of city touring, i think montreal will be covered by my mate living there.. the falls are on the cards, toronto is definite..

cheers for the links matrix

I was up in this area quite a few years ago, it has some decent canoeing, but it's a good drive away.

I don't know if too many of the Toronto group would venture out of their S's, they might get wet and melt, or some of them might just boil away.

There's always some Class V rapids on the Niagara:

Just kidding!

If you have time, Quebec City is beautiful. About 2.5-3 hours east of Montreal (you'll feel like you're in Europe). Ottawa is nice for a day (canoeing in that area would be worthwhile). Say hi to Robin Hood.

yeah, quebec city is the only thing in the east thats beautiful.

I also recommend taking the VIA Canadian Train from Toronto - Vancouver to realy get a good picture of the country.

From just before Winnipeg to Just after Edmonton will be sinfully boring, but this will give you the chance to spend some time with your friends and lounge around. Once you hit Jasper make sure you have a good camera. Also if you were to take this train ask them what time you will be around Jasper. Most of the time they time it so you hit Jasper around 8am (GMT -8:00) in the morning.
