Nice, interesting that little hook can hold the weight, when I did mine I had 4 hooks to distribute the weight and one of them snapped so I gave up and made a stand instead.
Just to be sure that the rig could take all 50lbs total, I hoisted myself up it. Had to get the fire department to get me down.
All kidding aside, yes I made sure about the weight capability of the rig and did hang off the wire rope to ensure the thing would not snap. The eye hook is "bolt" and not a lag screw, so it can't pull out of the wood. All hardware I bought was rated a minimum 4-5 times the working weight of what the total rig has to withstand.
Looks great. I like the idea of the rod across from side to side and then the strap from that around the back window, it looks very secure. I like it so much I think I will copy your idea...
I also noticed the steel cables and not rope, nice touch.
Someday I will get around to getting one made. I too made a HT stand and that is what I use now. I suspect in the future when I have the hoist made I will still store the HT in the stand; I'm just not comfortable storing the HT above my car...
As secure as I know this rig is, the lowest rated part is capable of 250lbs, I'm going to add a security line to it this weekend. That way should the planets aline, and the main cable let loose, the top will be kept from landing on the TL. The weight on the three main hoist points is less than 25lbs each, so they are not a concern. The strap is a 10,000lb tow strap. The rating on the 1/8" coated cable is at least 1,500lbs. So I'm comfortable with the top above the car. Notice it is not above the S.
