That was my thinking - I've been suspecting a coil pack, but I had always heard about their problems being more apparent than this. I'll see what happens today.

I tried an early AP2 coil pack today - there was no change in the problem. It looks like I'm just going to have to wait for a CEL to pop up. Really frustrating.

It's occurred to me that I could have made the mistake of putting regular gas in the car, since I've been driving my E30 a lot lately. It took 8.5 gallons of premium to fill it up tonight.

I'm still having this problem. Someone bumped a thread in UTH that discusses this problem. I've posted there; hopefully, someone in the greater S2KI community will have some more suggestions.

Yep, I've given it a shot. Definitely not the problem. Thank you for the suggestion, though.

I had a pretty similar problem. Replaced spark plugs and did a VA and cleaned IAC and TB/MAP hole. Nothing. Never tried flipping one coilpack around I had another owner let my try out his full set. Worked perfectly, replaced coils and no problems since. Try replacing them all at once. I think I found the whole set for like 250. Goodluck

Thanks for the suggestion - I've tried swapping a brand new '04 Denso coil pack into all positions, and it didn't change anything. Even if two were failing, I'd still expect to detect some kind of change. If more than two coil packs were acting up, I imagine the car would behave much worse than it does. The misfire code has not returned, either.

Again, thanks!

Get a leak down test done... you could have a slightly bent valve.

Compression test was pretty much perfect - 237-240# across the board. Could a bent valve still be a possibility? That would be a bummer. Unfortunately, school and work keep getting in the way of me taking a look at it. I'm going to check it out some more this weekend. Maybe something will jump out at me (doubtful)...
