Brakes on Fire!
That what happens when you don't use the right equipment.
David, be sure to check the gaskets between the piston and the caliper. The last time I set my brakes ablaze, the gaskets melted away. I had to replace one caliper entirely. Just a suggestion.

I think he should be ok. The fire was only momentary and was probably the result of putting a generous amount of anti-seize compound on the shims before going out and breaking in the new pads. We were doing a series of 70-80 to 5mph stops in succession to breakin the new pads and rotors and noticed an orange glow from the front brakes. I quickly sped back up to about 15 and the orange flickering went away!
Heheh, I thought about posting about the "Goodness gracious great brakes of fire" but didn't want to embarrass us due to our mechanical shinnanigans
So I hearby suggest we nickname the person who had my car before me "Mr. 900 ft-lbs" as that appeared to be the amount of torque he applied to any and all bolts on the car, lol.
But, the new pads (Cobalt GT-Sports) and rotors (Cobalt G3000 specs) are on and are working beautifully. The car stops far quicker than it did last time...can't wait to get that ATE Super Blue fluid in there so I can really abuse them!
Next steps: Potenza SO-2s (urgently needed as we realized when we took my tires off and saw how bald they are) and Fujitsubo exhaust (urgently needed after the reminder of hearing Chris' car start up in his garage vs. the sound my stock exhaust made when starting up in his garage)

Update: Took the car out for spin last night, and oh boy is it awesome. Stops SO much faster than it used to. Gets into the ABS a wee bit easier than I'm used to, lol.
I went down to my usual haunt (19W south of Erwin) and pushed it a little bit, but not too much since it was dark, my tires are somewhat bald in the back, my tires are not recommended for sub 40 degree weather, and there was snow on the ground. So basically it was a slightly suicidal "I have no dependents so doing something this dumb is ok" kind of run
But boy was it fun!
