Default Convertible Top

I have a 2004 S2000 and noticed a tear in the top yesterday. Wondering if anyone has experience with a Knox area shop or even replacing yourself. Priced it at Honda and they quoted $2466 plus tax, a local uphostery shop quoted $1900 plus tax. I checked the net and found replacement tops for $600 so considered doing it myself or finding an individual to pay to do it for me. I'm willing to assist of course, I'm technically capable, but just not sure of the pitfalls. I did find the very good instructions on the s2ki forum but still not sure of my capabilities.

I too am somewhat capable - usually just enough to get into trouble.
I think this task would be somewhat daunting if not time consuming. I feel your pain. Doing it yourself hinges on how long you can do without the car. Having an extra pair of hands is going to be a must. Finding someone with a little first hand experience would certainly be preferable and undoubtedly speed things up.

The backing for Robbins Tops is fairly strong on this site. I have no experience with changing one out but I understand that it can take 9 or 10 hours to do so. I heard one guy boast that he did it in 4/5 hours. At meets I've seen several after install, they looked great and the owners seemed pleased with the exchange. Robbin's site lists two local preferred installers but only one has a web site: http://www.precisiontinttn.com/id57.html
It looks like you would have to call them for labor pricing, it's not listed.
IMO the biggest pitfall is receiving the top with the glass intact. It's awfully thin.

I highly recommend the Robbins top. I have one on my MY01. I upgraded to the glass window with rear defog also. I did the install myself, with the help of my uncle and some beer. It took us about 10 hours or so but we also were taking breaks and drinking so yea. Its not necessarily hard, just frustrating and time consuming.

If I can be of any assistance let me know

Thanks for the input. Robbins was my preference for ordering the replacement top so we're in sync. I'm familiar with Precision Tint and I'll give them a call and ask about installation.

I went and got mine done at Kennedy Auto Trim in Lenior City. I wouldnt buy the top i did (cant remember the name because the rear window is smaller putting your rear view mirror off, but it wasnt robbins) but their work was the cheapest in town (800 bucks for the install) and very good. Got a 5 year warranty as well.

Check out the Carolina's forum on the same topic. We may be getting a group together to knock this out.
