Also, not to mention the exuberant amounts of money GM pays PER CAR to fund the union and their retirees. I think it's something like 3-4k per car goes towards that.

I'd even go as far as exorbitant. But a deal's a deal. They should have worked out funding for retirement back in boom times so they wouldn't be having to add it to the sticker price now.

i saw that too.....when your CEO is oblivious like wagoneer is its time to get rid of him. cross branding hasnt worked. time to trim the fat (which is the majority of the company IMHO) and start rebuilding or they wont make the return to profitablity by 2010 as per their goals.

Am I cold hearted because I don't care much if GM tanks or not? I feel for the individuals that may lose their jobs, but it doesn't seem smart to base your whole company on mainly one thing (hulking trucks and SUVs). Few people NEED an SUV. It's ridiculous the number of people who have them for no reason.

ford and crystler did the same. Ill 100% agree about the number of people that have 8 person people carriers for a family of 4. can they afford it.....maybe......is it needed no but some could say the same thing about our cars.
I remember being younger when we would take atleast 3 roadtrips to michigan a year. My parents would throw me, my brother, my sister (who was in a car seat the first few years) and our 75lb. dog stella into the back of a crown vic. while they absolutely blew monkey turds then those rides are just as memorable as the actual reasons for the trips to begin with. long story short it built character.
I think we are going to see (and to an extent have already been able to see) a rebirth of something similar to those times very soon. Those that can afford to, will keep their SUVs but most will ditch them for nicer 4 door sedans.

I agree. I think it comes and goes. I think my generation people still in elementary/middle/high school will grow up with a greater social conscious because of these issues being such a concern to *some* of their parents and being in the news and learning about it in school an such. Sadly, that will probably swing back the other way sometime just like there was the "hippie" generation that cared about stuff like that and their children were the Navigator/Starbucks-buying crowd. It all ebbs and flows and always will.
