Launching
Jake and Jason seem to be authorities on most things, so I assume this too. (No sarcasm, I think you reallly are)
Anyway, why don't we schedule a get together in a particuler abonded or deserted place to learn and practice properly launching the S. Few of us track or Auto X the car. I hope to graduate to that. But I would like to, in the mean time, get a chance to launch the car. I feel weird at stoplight if I rev it. If it is not a race, it is usually a minivan or SUV. So I don't think I have ever "launched" the car. I concede, especially after the Dragon, that Jason is a far superior driver. Why not bestow some of that knoledge? Instead of getting together to stare at each other's cars and eat random food, let's make it benifitial for all.
The fact is that I have I/E and think I can run pretty fast, but have never found a place or time to launch. If we could find such a place and make it a class experience, maybe we could all learn soemthing.
thoughts?

I'm all for another dinner meet in the near future
As launching goes there are a few things to take into cosideration.
First, the goal. You want to break your tires loose. If you rev the engine up and slip the clutch, but do not break the tires free then you are putting alot of strain on your diff and drive train that would not occur if you spun the tires.
Next is the road temp, colder temps mean that it is going to be much easier to break your tires loose.
I'd probably start in an empty lot by driving in a circle, practice rev'ing the engine while the car is moving and dropping the clutch this should cause the back end of the car to swing out, and give you a feel for the friction of your tires.
Generally about 6, 6.5 is the rev range where you will probably end up launching from, of course this depends largely on the tires. You want to spin the tires enough to avoid stress on the car, while not spinning them so much that you loose time sitting in one spot spinning the tires.
Launching in auto-x doesnt require that you spin the tires, generally a chirp or squeal is enough to get you a good time, but spinning the tires is still less stress on the car.

Launching is a skill that is difficult to achieve....it will take some practice.
I've probably raced a 1/4 100's of times back up @ Englishtown. I have a giant stack of time slips...and a nice bill for some parts from launching and getting too much traction.
I spent 3.5 years w. my WRX trying to launch well....that's awd so a little different.
Jason is right, you just need to get that feel where the car will slip enough so you don't destroy the car but enough to keep from bogging the car once you've started to move.

Sounds like it could be useful. Has anyone broken anything after doing this mod?

I have done extensive research on this and it will cause more harm than good. I use to drag race a lot, (not in the S) and launching a car isn't really something I've seen anyone teach to someone else. You just have to know the exact moment to drop the clutch and hit the gas to achieve a good launch.
Honestly, a good launch to me isn't spinning the tires. It also isn't destroying the drive train. Most of the time people over rev and spin the hell out of the tires or burn the clutch trying to keep from spinning. I've successfully launched the car with little to no wheel spin before and it shoots out of the hole if done correctly. It just feels right when it happens and the car reacts well.
Launching a FWD car is a lot different, you had to spin through first gear basically to get any decent times at the track but I've found in the S you can launch it without beating the hell out of it.
