Nah, they used those to shoot shit down man. There are 4 .50's on the ventral turret. And 4 more 20mm on board.
They were a pretty effective night fighter. My grandfather had a good story about a P-61 pilot who pissed off the wrong ground crew.
The pilot landed on Gaum, and was taxiing back to the hardstand. He managed to kill the mechanics dog with the still running props. His response to the very angry ground crew was "go eff yourself"
The ground crew may have had something to do with an unfortunate engine failure of that very same P-61 when he left Guam headed for Okinawa, because he didn't make it, and nobody ever found the pieces.
