Valve Retainers
If you're comfortable removing the valve cover and know what to look for I'd say yeah it's easy enough to inspect. If you're going to do it you might as well check/adjust the valves while you're there.
none were cracked they were just a bit worn at 75K on the clock so he went ahead and replaced them. Better safe then sorry and no I kept AP1 retainers. As for the service. It was excellent. They kept my car overnight and had it tucked away in the garage. I got a free loaner car (it was gross but hey it was free) and they everything done the next day. With the adjustment and 75K mile tune up i think it was 375 or so. Not to bad consider WSH wanted 380 for just the tune up.
If you have a high mileage car bought used I would strongly recomment the valve adjustment. While my valves were off very little the reseating made a big difference on the feel of the car. Gas mileage was slightly better, start up was easier, and the engine in general felt much smoother.

But if the car has been mis-shifted and overreved you might want to have the retainers checked out.
