Default Tire width

OK, dumb question, but I recently purchased 18x8's all around, with 225 40 r18 tires, my old tires on the stock ap1 16's were also 225's, but the new tires look skinny as all hell. What gives?

Yeah, IDK. It annoys me. Maybe I just need to run 255's but I'm not even sure I can get away with it on an 8" wide rim.

Well, long story short, I got the 18's mounted and balanced, new tires and wheels, with lug nutz, as an all in one package, for 700.00 shipped, so it was hard to pass up...

Do you mean skinny as in wheel width or sidewall height? AP1 wheel widths are 6.5" front and 7.5" rear with tire widths of 205 front and 225 rear. Running a 225 on a 8.0" wheel will be slightly more stretched than on a 7.5" wheel so that may be your optical illusion for "skinnier."

So then would a 235 get me the "illusion of width" back...?

Probably but you will have a different speed than what your speedometer is displaying.

225/45 = 101.25mm sidewall height

235/40 = 94mm sidewall height
235/45 = 105.75mm sidewall height

If you go with 235/40 you will have an overall height loss of 14.50mm. You will be going slower than what your speedometer says.
If you go with 235/45 you will have an overall height gain of 9mm. You will be going faster than what your speedometer says.

The differences are probably marginal though.
