Along with the transformers idea, i think that this would also be a good alternative

I agree it might look silly, but I'd rather that then get pegged in the head/eye with a piece of gravel or worse. I've seen some nasty things being kicked-up on the highway. A few months ago, a 4 ft. long piece of rebar caused $700 of damage to my RSX. I wouldn't want something like that striking my noggin.
