I was just looking at this on Amazon (I have a Magellan Meridian that I love - but the larger PC screen and yearly updates roads is appealing)

Here's one of their user reviews (several more were similar):
I bought this software to aid with navigation in the car (or motorhome) and while I'm pleased with the ability of the USB GPS unit to receive a signal, I'm less than pleased with the functionality of the software. You can get detailed turn by turn directions after entering a begining and an end address - but I can do that for free on the internet. What dissapointed me most was that the GPS functionality is nothing more than placing a blip on a map where you are and telling you how fast you are going (like I needed that). There's no active trip calculation - no ETA to next turn, no indicator where you are on your current list of directions, and heaven forbid if the thing actually told you there's a turn approaching (boy, we're spoiled aren't we?). It's a nice and user friendly interface but the GPS functionality was obviously an afterthought that didn't get much effort
Is that true (about it not giving ETA's, calling out that it is time to turn etc)?

didn't you have to turn right around and buy a software pack right after you bought yours?!

I like the Microsoft one...sounds more user friendly...and I don't mind having my laptop in my car...it's usually with me when I travel.

yeah - you don't get the super detailed maps and turn by turn directions without paying $150 or whatever it was for their software.... but Kraemer pointed this out already on his site.

I have a Garmin GPSMap 60C and have been VERY happy with it. Yes I spent the extra money for the detailed maps and yes its a rip off but for what I need it works great. It could use more memory, but what couldnt? I loaded all the maps neccessary to go from any place in the metroplex to any place in the Houston area on mine, and thats alot of Texas roads. Having an update every year isnt as important for me since roads dont really change where I live lol. Also the screen on this model is the best LCD screen I have EVER seen, and the batteries really do work 30hrs +!!!!

Good write up though, pretty valuable to people who dont do alot of research.

However it should piss you off that you can have a Rino 520 for the exact same price, which is a 60C with radio and translocator built in. It begs the question, why not just sell the Rino and not the 60C? Its not cool to do that to your customers.

I'm tempted to use my laptop with that microsoft thingy on our next trip. I'm going to Kraemerize the WHOLE front end of my car this time. It'll look like the Spoon S2000 with the Blue front end done in Painter's Tape.

Maybe it should but I am just not the kind of person to get upset at something like that. I still got a perfectly good GPS unit. In the world of electronics you simply have to suck it up and realize something better is just around the corner all the time, so you can either always be waiting or buy what you need and not worry about the next best thing.
