Default Possible weird sound on my S2000

Occasionally while sitting at a stop light, I'll hear a whirring, whistling type sound that sounds like wind blowing between a narrow space. My wife has even commented that it sounds pretty bad. I tell her it is just the A/C dumping pressure or the AC kicking on, but today on the way back from lunch, it almost sounded a bit like clutch slippage on the fan belt or something.

When it's the whistling type sound, you'll hear it for 2-3 seconds at most.

Any ideas would be appreciated? Normal or not?

Could it be hot air escaping from the void...

That's inside the cabin.

I guess another good way to describe the sound is a low howling type noise.

My car makes all sorts of sounds I cant figure out. It also make a great sound around 6k RPM. Wait a while it likely will be replaced by a new sound.

David,

Does the air pump make a low howling noise? If so, that's probably it. It's been doing it for several months now and it's really no biggie, was more curious than anything else.

If you have an aftermarket intake on, you will clearly hear the airpump cycling through. No worries, with my stock airbox lid off, I hear this as well. with it on, it gets muffled out.

Awesome, PilotSi. I guess I didn't notice the noise until I put on my K&N FIPK, so I guess that settles it.

Thanks for the help everyone!

I strongly agree with that statement.

Seriously...my car makes noises just like the ones you described. The low pitch whirring noise I get is clutch related. Viscous coupling I suppose.

The high pitched whistling one (2-3 seconds at a time)...I still can't figure that one out, but I don't really worry about it too much. Sounds like a tiny jet engine to me. The only time I ever hear it is when the car is at idle, but it may be too soft to hear otherwise.

That is exactly what it sounds like and I only hear it at idle too. Obviously, at this point, I consider it totally normal and I'm not going to worry about it anymore. Thanks, Corey.
