Question about windshields...
Hey guys, yesterday I got a crack in my windshield (friggin rock... no clue where it "came from" but I remember hearing it hit)... it's on the passenger side in the bottom corner... one side has already split off towards the passenger side and stopped, the other is slowly working down towards the bottom... my question is if it finds it's way to the bottom w/o spidering off... (so it will pretty much be a line from the side edge to the bottom edge) what are the chances that it will spider into a bigger problem later? You can barely see it on the outside, except you can tell where the rock hit, it's kinda rough... I'm a bit worried about it splitting off from there more than anything else.
It's driving me nuts seeing the crack but I have a hard time spending good money on something that could happen again by fluke a day/week/month later if it doesn't *need* to be fixed.

If it's not too bad some places can actually repair it without replacing the whole thing. Also check your insurance policy, they usually have a seperate glass coverage provision so that you don't have to pay your normal collision deductible to get it fixed or replaced.
If the crack is more than 6 inches, most places won't repair. Mister Glass in Dallas is the best and they are mobile. I believe they are on Floyd Circle.
Your insurance company should waive your deductible if it is repairable.

i got a crack a few months ago that started from the top of my windshield and quickly grew down and curved right to where my tolltag is. then it stopped. so my tolltag is literally holding my windshield together. its funny, i gotta get a picture.

Well, I'll have to call around and get some info tonight... don't have time to do anything till Saturday anyway... -Doug
Once they start to 'run' there is nothing that can be done.
The good news is that the Binswanger place I took mine to for a chip repair after the Hill Country drive last year said they can get me a replacement windshield really cheap. I don't remember the exact price - but it was definitely under $200.

As if my insurance company doesn't already hate me enough as it is...

Most repairs are about $49. Kaiser is right on the replacement windshield. They are barely over $200.00

If I had my camera and my truck handy (in the S today and no camera) I'd take a pic of my windshield. Last August on the way to Colorado (somewhere in the middle of New Mexico) a rock flew up off a semi I was drafting and smacked my windshield HARD.
It made a nice quarter sized star. Somewhere in the next 5 minutes or so of driving it shot out two runners for a total height of about 6". I freaked out about it (I should have just relaxed and let it happen.. but it isn't in my nature) and made the friend I was caravaning with stop at a glass place to see if anything could be done (he rightfully accused me of being a huge wussy). The consensus was NO... but what the heck - they'd try for $5
So this poor guy is laying across my super hot hood in the sun trying to drill and glue all the runners. By the time he was done, there were 3 or 4 cracks that were ~10" long (even lightly touching the windshield to try to drill/glue them would make 'em run).
I gave him a $20 for his effort and continued onto our offroading trip. The cracks ran a tiny bit more during a full week of offroading - but not much. I thought they'd pretty much stay like they were indefinitely after that....
.... but then Winter hit
. That one day where it sleeted/iced up screwed the windshield good. I don't know if it was from the ice scraper (I was as gentle as I could be) or just from the contraction/expansion with the cold outside and defroster inside - but now I have 3 very impressive cracks ALL the way across the windshield
. They don't obscure the driver's view - so they *may* not fail me on my next inspection in April... but if so I'm prepared to buy a new 'shield.
I'm waiting to fix that and my cracked exhaust manifolds until after the big March desert wheeling trip tho. No sense in fixing the same thing twice.
