well im going with my buddy so we were thinking of checking out a few bars as well as anything you think would be worth visiting. never been to dallas but i always prefer to check out the actual city instead of the big tourist spots.
Victory Park. W Hotel with the Ghost Bar, several restaurants, and House of Blues. Probably the closest you'd want to get to downtown outside of business hours, since West End and Deep Ellum seem to have fallen off the past few years.

Uptown. McKinney Ave is basically the artery of this particular area of shops and restaurants, more on the high-end of things. Hop on the free trolley to traverse from the West Village on the north end and Dallas Museum of Art on the south end.

Lower Greenville. Stretches from Mockingbird on the north to Live Oak on the south. Lots of bars and restaurants, more on the "dive" end of things but not exclusively so.

Knox/Henderson area. Again, bars and restaurants. Good area to walk around in. Wild About Harry's on Knox St is excellent frozen custard.

Northpark Mall is good to see some of the higher end of Dallas shopping. It's a neat mall in its own right because instead of those damn annoying cellphone accessory kiosks and such in the middle of it all, there are original art installations (Andy Warhol, for example.)

Ghostbar at the W hotel is always a good recommendation for out of towners, if you live in Dallas its nothin that great after the first time....Otherwise you could check the knox street pub, thats always fun yet casual. It really depends on the day of the week too. Knox henderson area off of I-75 has a bunch of new pretty decent places...

Dallas doesn't have "tourist spots." That is, people don't come to Dallas just for a vacation - they come for business (such as your gf's convention,) visit family, or they already live here. The "feel" of Dallas as a city mostly revolves around shopping and dining, although there are plenty of opportunities for music, theater and art if you look them. Here are a few different areas you can walk around, and maybe find something to your taste:
Victory Park. W Hotel with the Ghost Bar, several restaurants, and House of Blues. Probably the closest you'd want to get to downtown outside of business hours, since West End and Deep Ellum seem to have fallen off the past few years.
