1st Service - Own Oil
I have booked my S in for its first service (9200miles) next week, however seeing that Sainsbury have their oil deal on oil at the moment I reckon I will supply my own oil (10w 40 Semi-Synthetic Magnatex). Question is do you have to inform them before hand, or can you just rock up and supply the oil?
Also I have asked them to change the gearbox and diff oil at the same time, sicne the gearbox is a bit notchy and oil is cheaper than the parts! Is Honda standard oil ok, or is it worth bringing another oil for this too?
Thanks!

At 9000 I would go fully synth.
Tell the dealer you will supply your own oil before hand. Often they have it ready on the invoice etc. (ask for the empty container too once used )
The Oil they use should be of the correct spec - ask them to confirm WHICH oil they will be using for transmission, and ESPECIALLY the diff.
Ask to speak to the mechanic himself too if you can.
Where are you and which dealer are you going to?

There's a LOT of oil threads where people recommend oils. MY own preferred is Redline 0w30
There are many other popular choices. and here's a quote:
If you so a search on "Oil" in the UK Forum, and username oilmansi you're bound to find something useful (use the search button at the top though, not the search bar)

Magnatec is not synthetic oil, it's a poxy semi-synth. I got caught out by this one.
The only fully synth Castrol oil that I know of is Castrol SLX which is about

I just got the Shell oil from the petrol station - in the grey bottle.
Yes just let the dealer know before you get there! However I'm assuming gear box oil is completely different - also, most of the gearboxes are notchy (mine included) so is it "standard" notchiness you're feeling or something unusual?

I use Havoline Synthetic 5W-40 which is made from Group IV base oils so it is a 'true' synthetic if that floats your boat
It comes in 5 litre bottles and my local Texaco sells it for
