Fuel filter should be replaced at certain service level.
Check the spark plugs are clean
Maybe an ECU reset

I think it's a pain in the *rse, because of its location. My servicing guy did this on mine and it added a couple of hours to the labour costs IIRC.

Do an ECU reset first as that costs nothing - disconnect the battery for 15-20 mins. I had a problem with a rough running engine a couple of years ago and that solved it for me.

TBH you'll never need to change the fuel in the car life unless you have problems which is unlikely.

The fuel filter described is actually a sock, some believe there is actually another filter but thats not described.

My dealer told me they've never seen any problems (even with really old cars) with them even though it is in the schedule, they said dont bother unless you have problem and you dont get rust etc like in older cars.

If you do it, it has to be done properly to stop dust getting in etc, so gasket is a must.

1. The first thing is ICV valve, this without going into jargon controls the idle you could clean that, do a 'search' you bascially remove, clean with carb cleaner.

2. Stuttering at vtec could be spark plugs or fuel related, or even valve clearances - VC could effect idle.

3. Your injector could need replaced or cleaned.

4. An ECU reset will force the car to learn idle again, actually sometimes it does solve things.

5. Giving the MAP sensor a whack is a good idea too - 'search' for MAP whack its dead easy.

6. Could be 02 sensor.

My advice is check out the simply things first like sparkplugs, map etc then work up to the other things

Servicing is important on these cars. What age, condition is the car in.?

Plugs, MAP sensor, blocked injector and valve clearances are the most likely.

Fuel filter is unlikely.

Idle valve is also unlikely as you have an issue during VTEC and that sensor isn't used there/

It is also unlikely to be the 02 sensor as that isn't used on VTEC.

So you need to think of what is common to both modes.

And that's the first sentence above

Of course it could be lots of things, but web diagnosis is often impossible

I'd suggest ruling out the easy stuff like changing the plugs and giving the MAP sensor a firm few taps. Valve clearence issues tend to give you a CEL light but I think that's a likely one - which would need dealer attention.

The o2 sensor is used on idle though Mark, but not in vtec as you say,

Though with the limited information its diffiucult to say, and as Mark says web diagnosis is difficult.

Also just had a thought, check you vac lines too i had an issue with idling when a vac line wasnt connected! have a quick nosey round your engine bay though for sure.

Sounds like a map sensor issue or valve clearances, my moneys on this.
