Well here's some pics of both sets of tyre. Sorry about the appalling camera shake on the third picure of the rears (Couldn't see it on the camera screen).
S02 v RE050A pics
Now to get the original wheels refurbed and some cup sports for the summer.

Sorry to purloin your picture Craig, but that perfectly demonstrates WTF I'm banging on about:
Notice how the new tyre has shoulders like a bottle of Guinness, whilst the older is wide & square to the edge.

sorry to put another angle on this but no one has metioned the compound on the tyres, s02(old technology) V REo5oa (new technology)
Surly the road contact area is not the only factor as the REW050A obviously has drastically less contact, hence in the same compound it would make the grip/handling dramatically different, but with new technology there is marginal difference.

What's all this "new technology" that allegedly makes new things better?
You can only do so much with styrene compounds; it's not an iPod.
Moore's law doesn't apply to cars.

If it were the case, then surely they should be recommending smaller front tyres as well to the rear/front grip balance stays the same?
Don't need new tyres yet but will in next 6 months (fronts anyway, rears in next year) so will keep an eye on how things progress with other owners.
Current thinking is going for Good Year F1's that are strongly recommended by many, using 205 and 245s. I'd rather use Bridgestones if recommended as long as the right size etc. I'm not convinced that 225s are right.
