Default 80mph speed limit

Sign this:

For balance, I could find a link to the petition arguing that it should be kept at 70, but I'm assuming most people here are sane.

sorry, but it'll never happen. With CO2 so high on the agenda, promoting / permitting an increase in speed limits is never going to happen. I'd love to eat my hat over this, but I don't think I'll be doing so sadly.

I don't see any reason to increase it. TBH most people do 85 on the motorway. Put it up to 80 and most people will do 95mph.

The standard of driving just isn't good enough in this country for me to be happy with our mostly terrible selfish drivers doing 100mph.

And our roads aren't up to the job either.

I'll continue to have my fun on deserted 60 limit roads driving as the conditions allow

I am tempted to disagree with Bassoctopus - I dont think 'most' people do 85 - there are some of course and there are loads that do a lot more too.. But I agree that our roads would get worse (tarmac quality etc)

I think if they moved it to 80, they would have to re visit the penalty structure for speeding - ie they probbaly wouldnt let you off for doing +10% etc or at least be as lenient. Thats another reason why it wont happen - they are making big cuts in the police service!

Or maybe it will - If the limit is raised to 80mph, then I expect lots of drivers will no longer be breaking the law and so there is no crime to police. Agree with you about the 10% thing though - 90 would become the new 80.

I dunno, I don't think I do 80-85 because the speed limit is 70 and that's as much as I can push it. I think I do it because it feels like a sensible natural speed for a modern car on a motorway. If I'm in area's of Europe where it's legal, I still do the same sorts of speeds.

I think most people do that kind of speed anyway, it'd just be nice if people were looking more at the road than their speed, and if police cars wheren't like rolling road blocks.

I think the majority travel at the speed they feel safe at. 70 is too slow in a modern car on an empty road, everybody knows it, and also everybody knows that the police tend to be reasonable and not stop people for driving safely a bit above the limit. So I don't think increasing the limit will actually make much difference to the real world. People who feel safe doing a maximum of 80-85 are going to continue doing so, and the police won't give the same leeway they do now meaning the effective speed limit will stay about the same.

So you could say it's a waste of money even doing it, but at least it's a bit more honest.
