Default Air Filter ?

Hello there,

Anybody out there bought a JR filter in the UK? I know there has been a fair bit of discussion on this subject, but i cant find out where people in the UK bought their filters from.
Also, been looking at the comptech CAI, looks interesting, anybody got one? dyno figure? noise? etc!
Thanks alot.

I was having a look at Cameron's (Maca) dyno sheets at the meet on Sunday. Without kicking off a flame war I'll just say I won't be buying a JR filter. You should see the improvements in power across the rev range he got with the HKS induction kit though!! (Like going on 20 bhp more than what the JR filter provided!!)

I think Maca is selling his HKS setup now he is 100% Mugen , why not drop him a PM to see what he wants for it?

I've got one, definately better than stock paper one, (however that was filthy at 10,000 miles)

I'll dig details out for you later.

If the dyno sheet's the same one he posted on Under-The-Hood, then it's a pretty useless IMHO.

He started and ended up with far less power than my stock MY2001, and far less than the average for a stock car.

The HKS is a tuned pipe style CAI, which can provide decent power gains due to resonance effects. Just like the AEM intake for example. But it won't make 20bhp - no intake on the S2000 makes that much.

The drop in filters JR or K&N don't really change the power at all. You get more consistent filtration, certainly compared a dirty stock filter. You also get a filter that you can clean cheaply for life.

The S2000's stock induction setup is very good - one reason we're making 237bhp from 2 liters. So far, there are 2 proven approaches to a better S2000 intake. Ram air style (Mugen and Spoon) for using positive pressure at speed to gain some power. Or 'tuned pipe' style intakes like the AEM, or HKS. These are making power, but often with a few bumps, and so far seem to have less benefits higher up the rev range. The HKS will make some power, I'm sure, but it won't make 20bhp.

The HKS did not make 20 hp. From the dyno sheets:
Test 1: HKS filter 248 engine hp
Reset ECU
Test 2: HKS filter 247 engine hp
Reset ECU
Test 3: Standard Filter 237.5 engine hp
Reset ECU
Test 4: Standard Filter 237 engine hp
Reset ECU
Test 5: JR Filter 227 engine hp (unstable above 8200 rpm)
Rest ECU
Test 6: JR Filter 228 engine hp (again tailed off at 8500 rpm)
Reset ECU
Test 7: Refit HKS filter system 244 engine hp
Reset ECU
Test 8: HKS Filter system 247 engine hp

The car was left on the rollers and all tests were conducted over 2 hours. Temp remained constant. Tif was comparing the HKS figure to the JR figure I would think.
As Brian says, the standard set-up is very good. HKS worked by the tuned pipe length that is used. IMHO it made a difference of around 7-10 bhp like most other systems.
Please pm me if you are interested. It takes about 2 hours to fit the kit.
I also have heat shielding to go with this as all the alloy pipe systems will get some heat soak under the bonnet which can quickly loose any gains.

I researched UK source for K&N and JR filters a few weeks back as i was going to buy one or the other. Now i'm not so sure!!

Anyway, for those of you that are not rattled by the dyno sheets (surely a new JR/K&N gives better filtration than a dirty 10,000 mile stock one??) here is the place to buy:

Yep, I did actually say this in my post Brian!

I was trying to illustrate that getting substantial gains out of the S2000 on the induction side needs a lot more than just a drop in filter.
