Air filter chopping - bugger me!
Ok I was a little sceptical about taking a hacksaw to my airbox, but I decided what the hell and did it last night. Bloody hell - how can something so easy have such a noticeable improvement on performance?
Even someone with mechanical DISability can do this in about 15 mins. I don't have a dremel so resorted to pliers and brute force to remove the partition. A small piece of cardboard and lots of gaffer tape later and VOILA!
I've only done about 20 miles or so since, but there has been such an obvious improvement to throttle response and engine noise from 3,500 rpm onwards. Even to the point of feeling more pushed back into the seat under acceleration. A few overtaking maneuvers later and I'm wondering why everyone doesn't do this mod.
Should get even more interesting once Mark's CAI and K&N arrive and get added to the recipe - hehehe.
One happy camper!

Ben - make sure to use some proper glue to seal the hole. That piece of cardboard will fall off as heat gets to it.
Things will most definitely get better once you add the air duct!
Did you remove the L shape air director on the lid?

There's a fairly long thread somewhere but the gist of it is that you remove the central vertical partition and L-shaped pipe inside the air box, and stop up the hole that leads to the resonance chamber - dead easy to do!
Lid remains on, but you're allowing the (stock) filter to get more air and the engine noise is louder as the air can't escape from the chamber.
Simple but very effective

Excuse my ignorance. I understand chopping the partition out & blocking the hole, but where is the l-shaped pipe? Is it the big thingy in the top of the box as pictured in Brian's post referenced by Fletch?

Yep - its the bit that directs the air from the actual intake on the front of the box to the filter - just rip that bugger out!!!
Dead easy!

This is stage one of the "better breathing" mods - once I get my hands on the CAI and K&N, then things should get even better.
Not a bad start though - considering its free and easy to do!
