Default Air Pump?

Hi guys,

Could someone be kind enough to explain what the air pump is for, amd what looks like is located in the passenger front wing area.

What are the reasons behind having this unit supply air to the engine on startup and do other engines utilise a similar system?

Thanks in advance,
Mudgey

I remember this coming up before - I was told it was to in someway to 'fudge' the emmissions of the car for the first 1.5 mins approx.. I belive this was something to do with the Canadian emission rules... However I can't confirm that this is true it might be a load of old pony....

Ahah,

It turns out it pumps air into the exhaust to burn the remaining hydrocarbons in exhaust when cold, this was neccessary to meet the current emissions standards and also helps to bring up the CAT to operating temperature sooner.
