There's enough space in the headunit cavity for the '865B unit and a whole bunch of other crap. As you face the dashboard, behind the headunit there are quite handy spaces on either side of the tranny tunnel behind and below the height of the headunit (if that description makes sense...) The '865B unit fits snugly in the space on the right.

But its still annoying. Its a squash.

I bought bullet connectors, inline 20A, high voltage lucar (or eye connector) for the +ve, about 2 meters of heavy duty multi core. The soldered the lot together. Took about 1 hr total.

soldering eh? Will involve me driving over to (empty) parents' house and digging out the soldering iron - watch out for the fire on Central News!

Went into Halfords last night to buy the connectors to wire up the HU to the battery and the Audio guy reckoned that BOTH power leads should go straight to the battery because in a number of cars (particularly VWs) the Alpine units have drawn such power that the red wiring which is tied into the audio power supply has been burnt out. However, you have to remember to take the HU fascia off to avoid draining the battery! I personally think that's a bit of scare-mongering and I think I know what CC's comments will be, but its an interesting tack from someone who is used to fitting Alpine HUs!

Ah, but surely the only reason one power cable has to be loomed is for the "ignition on" trigger? I think what he is suggesting is that both power leads go direct to the battery so that the HU is effectively permanently on.

Gay mate. Ignore the fool. You do not want that permanently on. Its the gayest thing that Hell hole has ever emitted.

If I see the freak that said that to you, I would punch him square on in the face. Permanently on? What a f*cking pr1ck.

The 12v permie provides 12v; does he think 2 in parallel will make any difference? what an idiot.

His argument was that the HU could then get 2 x 20 "pure" amps rather than feeding off one "pure" and one loaded set of wiring - I'm definitely following Alpine's instructions this time though!
