Thumbs up avoid uk import tax

I don't know if its just an urban legend but...

I remember hearing somewhere that if you are importing a non uk car to UK. Providing theres 3,000 more miles from the date of purchase to arriving at uk port on clock.. you dont have to pay vat.

Sounds too good to be true...

I looked on net but cant find anything about it.... may be they dont want us to know

what do u guys think...?

Give HMR + C a phone they'll tell you and wont give you a hard time for asking.

You have to pay VAT if you import a used car from Japan. I did in 2001 anyway.

There was some loophole that involved collecting the car from Belgium and having to drive it there before it came to the UK, but I'm guessing that's long since closed.

I think that there's something I've heard about actually owning the car in a different country, as the registered keeper, and then importing it. You can get around the tax rule that way.
