i'm possiblythinking throttle position sensor as mentione above, because when stuck in heavy london traffic it did feel as though my foot wasn't fully controlling the amount of throttle. basicall, sometimes i was revving too hard and at other times i was nearly stalling...hmmm

Get the code.
The lambda can do that to the throttle response. It governs the cars fuelling, and when they fail they screw up both the idle control and the closed loop fuelling.
Its rare a TPS goes wrong, its such a simple device. Not to say it isnt that, but its less likely.

Agree with mark, pull the code before you start spending money. In my case the car went funny and I changed the MAP sensor. It was fine for 6 months+ but then similar (but worse) symptoms returned. I changed the MAP again but it didn't work and in doing so I reset the ECU and as soon as I started her back up she chucked a CEL. Took it to a dealer and the TPS sensor was to blame. The car still driveable - but erratic - so I declined the
