Older batteries can fail if allowed to go flat, found that out on the forecourt the hard way.
I expect a battery to get weak after about 3 years, even if they have a 4year guarantee.

 

a 12 volt lead acid battery needs around 14.4 volts to charge this is to over come the internal resitance of the battery. As they get older sulfate despostis build up on the lead plates and the efficiency drops. If you get 4 , 5 , 6 years out of a normal car battery you are doing ok.

The battery in my MY00 car (101,000 miles) is going strong and starts the car first time after being sat for a fortnight......not sure how much longer for though!
