Default Been out for a spin in a MY04

Been looking to buy an S2K for the last month or so now, and I keep end up uping my price. Just been out in an MY04 GT from a local garage and I was pretty impressed, although the alloys were pretty beat and it was high millage for the year. I really liked the change of tone when you hit 6k. Fantastic . Anyway, I never believe that you should buy the first car you see without seeing a few more, but in my price range I mainly seem to be looking at MY02/03, but I'm struggling to find the right combination of colours at main dealers (I feel a bit nervous about spending 17k ish privately). Personally I think I prefer the look of the outside of the MY02 (round exhausts) and the interior of the MY04. Pitty really. What are peoples personal impressions of the differences between an 02 and 04, and which would you go for, a better kept low millage 02 or an 04 high miler?

I'd gor for the high mileage 04 one with the curbed alloys and probably bent tracking over a mint 02 model.....

Oh no I'm taking the piss....

Why do you want to buy a car that hasn't been looked after at all well?

Over all the car looked in pretty good nick, and I think half the damage on the alloys may have been corrosion. the garage has offered to refurb them for me though, but I suppose I would prefer to have it better looked after. Perhaps I just got caught up with the enthusiasm of having being playing in VTEC . time to keep looking methinks.

No need to be nervous if you follow your own advice and not buy the first example you see.

Take your time, get the vehicle inspected and you could find yourself a real bargain this time of year.

I got mine privately for just over 16k 2 years ago and it's never missed a beat.

Looks nice, but is WAAAY out of my price range. I'm really after black with red or red/black interior. A bit scared of the mods too as the insurance is bad enough already. I suppose i should just be patient, but you know how it is, when drive it, you want one!!

I'm the owner of said car

The Amuse exhaust will be sold separately, so the stock exhaust will be replaced. Ditto the PRM intake. So mods need not be an issue. To be honest, I haven't found that either of them jacked the premium up noticeable in any event.

But if it's out of your price range anyway, fair enough

Having owned an 02 and an 04, I'd say I prefer the latter - the 99-03 rims look too small now, having got used to the 17s. That said, there's not enough difference between the two to make it worth buying a ropey high mile 04 over a nice 02/03.

The question over 02/03 or 04/05 is mroe to do with the different characteristics of the cars.

The 02 was sharper, and better in the dry (in OEM form), the the 04 more comfortable, and better in the wet. It's horses for courses really - I can't make up my mind which is the best from having both. You may not get enough of an idea of the differences on a short test drive to tell what you would rpefer in the long run.

The only age related issue that would push me towards a younger car is this damn suspension bush corrosion thing - otherwise, buy on condition unless the mileage differential is huge.

I'll be putting my MY02 up for sale as soon as it's through its MOT in late March. No mods and sub 40k miles. Keep an eye on the For Sale section ...
