Ferrari had the solenoid exhaust valve first, IIRC. Drive by noise regs, IIRC.

Not sure if Yamaha's EXUP valve really counts; it's more a form of VTEC.

Really?

I thought the flap in the exhaust collector area was to provide back pressure at low revs (valve closed).... nowt to do with valve lift...

Correct - EXUP is nothing like VTEC.
