There is one potentialy very serious drawback that Andy W has pointed out - it is possible for a small stone to be thrown up high enough to be drawn into and eventually penetrate the filter.... you don't want that to get inside your engine.... (this has happened to owners by the way..... with all the grit on our roads my lid is firmly on at the moment )

Yep, that kind of bad

The worst bit is that apparently by reviewing the recent history data on the ECU they can also see that the cover has recently been off the car thus giving them grounds to disallow a waranty repair

Dont forget one of the main reasons the air box is there, its to stop the hot air from the engine being sucked up thus giving you reduced power sounds great if you dont want optimum performance out of your car.

In that case I'm going to put a piece of fine netting over it.

As to performance, I have to say that, if there is a drop in perfomance, it is so small that I've not noticed it, and the thrill factor more than compensates

Pete

PS Which owners has this happened to TR?

I found Andy's original post. It was his local dealer who told him. I just phoned my dealer and asked if they'd seen bulletin from Honda on the stone / ECU issue and I also spoke to their chief mechanic. They know of no bulletin warnings on this.

I've looked at the car and tried to imagine how a stone could do what's been described. Seems a bit like the JFK magic bullet theory to me!

PS
So I will leave my cover off (but put a net over it too)
