Thumbs up Blue Smoke

Hi all,

I noticed this morning on start up that MY02 with 64k on the clock was slightly emitting blue smoke which smelled of oil. (This was in amongst the usual cold start up water vapour etc.)

Seems to go away after a few minutes.

Anyway does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this?

Could it be the dreaded valve stem seals??

When you say 'dreaded' that's a bit of an exaggeration.

It probably is, but I think it's actually to do with the EGR circuit and it variously affects Hondas and it doesn't matter whether they've been standing for a long time or not. They just do it when they feel like it.

The 'Lude did it fairly frequently until I cleaned out the intale and the top pressure non-return valve. Now I don't notice.

It's not liek VAG engines, where the oil stem seals can be a true PIA.

It could be valve stem seals though?

They can lose their suppleness through lack of use/when cold, but can be fine once they have warmed up...

Or are they really not an issue on these lumps? I am used to Vauxhalls!

No; they lose their suppleness due to repeated heat cycles & oil contamination (!) and use of unsuitable (cheap) rubber.

Whilst GM has designed some excellent engines, take a Honda unit apart and you will see the difference in build quality. The component finishing is like a watch.

Just keep an eye on your oil consumption and do what Nick recommends with the Intake and Crank pressure check valve.

I have done a few things to mine to reduce intake of breather gunk into intake.

Installing a catch can is a good start.

And always change yur oil often!

Brilliant, could be my AEM getting slightly wet then. Its the type one in the wheel arch liner.

Nick can you point me out to which parts I need to clean up please.

When warmed up the smoke goes away as well.
