Well been a bit of a lull in progress but toby was over today and he started looking at gaping the new rings , decided he needed a fine wheel for the ring machine , so that's on order .

he took the oil pump apart , throughly cleaned it and checked all clearances , this engine having done 75k miles all the clearances are at the lower end of the new tolerances let alone in the service limit zone.

its fully cleaned now, ready to fit , wrapped in cling film

Did you do any DIY balancing of the rotating bits ? I've always thought that looks quite a fun job - grinding bits off lovely new con rods

You need a very expensive balancing machine to balance rotating assemblies! Something which can plot balance vectors and tell you where to remove weight.

Blueprinting, so getting all the same weight.

My bad, I meant reciprocating rather than rotating This bit
rather than this bit

No, I've not done any balancing. Seeing as the rods and pistons are new I assumed they'd be more than adequate. Spec sheets tell me they're all the same weights.

As Toby says , the component data, sheets shows weights as measure to a very high level of accuracy .

we,did discuss end weighing the rods when we,thought about re using the Honda units , rods and pistons which often vary considerably .

Honda crank has clearly been balanced and adjust by Honda

I mean pleas the F20c is often like like. A bag of rusty spanners any way , it's not turbine smooth is it !

next problem he's looking at is ring gaps , lots of options depending on application , and many many opinions,, especially from key board mechanics !,,, as always

lol, nope I wouldn't ever expect to use "F20C" and "turbine smooth " in the same sentence. I've never done a full engine rebuild of anything so awaiting the "ring gapping" episode with interest

Hi Rob,

Many thanks for showing me the engine a couple of nights ago.

One quick question concerning the block and tolerances: you mentioned the bearings in Toby's engine are within 0.001" of each other which is quite impressive!

However, when you separate and then reassemble the upper and lower blocks (and hence the two halves of the main bearing shells) what ensures that everything lines up? If they are not perfect then surely the bearing tolerance is compromised? That may sound like a daft question, so I'll ask it another way. Are the mating dowels which locate the upper and lower blocks together accurate enough to be confident that as the bolts are torqued the blocks are pulled into alignment sufficiently to ensure the main bearings shells all line up (in your case to 0.001")

Thanks for any advice.
