Caddy got fixed today, bought a gearbox from a 2L gti for £50, new clutch, new gearbox oil, crankshaft seal transmission side, engine oil and filter too.
Was a right pig, had to swap the drive shaft cups which took up most the time.
Took it out for a test dive and the ratios are better than the last box! Plus the gear changes are beautiful!
Needs tracking doing as I didn't know how much camber to put on when reassembling, so I naturally maxed it out ... Lol!
So that needs adjusting.

The bad news is that there is excessive play in the bottom end bearings for con rods 1&4, engine is on its way out.

The plan was to swap it all out for a pd130 engine (1.8 turbo diesel) that'd cost around 2-2.5k though. This was going to be saved for and done over winter after the V8 is done, going to have to save a bit harder and get it done asap before the engine throws its hand in.

Bright news is my time for the S2 is now freed up (wasted 3 days on the caddy) and tomorrow late afternoon will see the coolant pipes being made up! Monday night will be for the intake pipe if I make good progress with the coolant pipes.

I'm no VDUB fan boy but why not go for the pd150 engine?

Good question, she's 21, has less than a years driving experience and her first year's insurance wasn't exactly savoury, a 130 will suffice haha.

I also have a mate who is eager to help and has extensive knowledge in VWs, vaguely remember him saying something about the pd130 being more reliable.

Spent most of today trying to fashion my own stainless elbows, they looked dog shit.
Guess I'll have to buy some.

Is it straight drop in and plug in, no fiddling with the wiring?

A little but, you need to put a relay for each pump which is included.
