You should report it as an absolute minimum.

However, the police will likely do bugger all if (a) you have no independent witnesses - regardless of whether it was a 'fail to stop' (I learned this from bitter experience when I was on the receiving end of a shunt a few months back), and (b) you have no CCTV evidence. As for it being private property, couldn't comment. The lesson I learned is always get details of an independent witness. If they're unwilling, that's a real pisser.

On the insurance front, well, depends if you've got protected no-claims or not, and ultimately what the cost of any repair is. Unless your insurer can claim costs from the other party it will count as a loss claim against you and will hit your NCD. Even with protected chances are you're limited to something like two claims in any three year period - hence why the cost of the repair becomes important. Not to mention any excess you have to pay!

All such doom and gloom. Anyway, back to the point - get any CCTV footage, report to police, get quote for damage, decide what to do with repairs. That's what I'd do anyway.

But this is not on the Public Highway, it's on a business premises.
You are going to struggle here.
It's an accident and not malicious (not criminal damage) its minor, and its civil.
I think the Police won't be too interested, unfortunately.

They may have paid by card, so try and wrangle a name from them.
But, as you are both customers I doubt Sainsbury will want to be involved.
It's a road under the road traffic act so the law applies.

Having the accident is not criminal but not complying with the law relating to accidents is.

Report it.

A few years back I experienced something similar. I walked out a petrol station shop to find my motorbke lying on it's side after a car had knocked it off it's stand. Another customer had noted the plate and I reported it to the police. They were very intrested and followed it up quickly - as has been said they take a dim view of this and rightly so. I ended up claiming for the bike repairs on the guys insurance and he was eventually prosecuted for leaving the scene of an accident.

Actually its not, it's a "public place".

However, you are correct about application of the law and I stand corrected.
Sorry if I mislead anyone.

I go out of my way to track down these offenders as I regard this as a heinous crime. I see why they do it (puts up their insurance etc) but would do my utmost to get a prosecution. Unfortunately I became a victim earlier this year

Definition of a road under the road traffic act.

'Any way, other than a waterway, by which the public have access at the material time'

This includes pavements verges and all the rest. (that bit's not part of the definition)

It is only considered private if any member of the public can't access it.

Errr, there will be camera evidence - you have the time and the Reg, the longer you leave it the less chance you have of getting them. I'd be pretty cross with you if you didn't report it.
