Buying a Cat C or Cat D Write-off
Only thing that puts me off a Cat D is the resale value, and the hassle of selling it because so many buyers will be put off. I wouldnt go for a Cat C.
I'd only ever buy one though if I knew EXACTLY what had happened, and how it had been repaired. Either that or buying one needing repair and then I know the work has been done right.
I'm sure someone on here bought an S2000 with paint stripper on it for very cheap earlier on in the year. Good deals can be found, especially if you know a good bodyshop.

price it at 30% below the price of unrecorded cars and you will sell it easily
the problem is, as we all know, that sellers try and get the same price, or very close to, that of unrecorded cars
Personally i wouldnt touch a cat C, not without an extensive accident report aswell as an extensive rebuild and costs report.
This would at least let you know what areas of the car have been damaged.
Ive known cat D cars to have had NO physical damage, eg someone threw paint stripper over 3 panels could be a cat D. Therefore your only outlay would be a respray (which it would probably need anyhow)
Dont forget though, when it comes time to move on, your car will be worthless (it will have a higher spare part value than as a whole sale), so as long as your prepared to spend the time when passing on then it really shouldnt be a problem.

It's a shame there isn't anything like the Focus RS register, where ALL number's of all Focus's are logged with pictures if they've been recorded in a crash.
Friend of mine was buying one, seen a nice cat d for about 2 grand cheaper than others, to be told it hit a lampost at 5-10mph, then to find it and looked like it done triple that speed if not more.
You don't half take a chance buying cat d's and c's

Is that the one with 14k miles on it located in Wales by any chance?
At this point he was wanting £9k for it, far too much!!
The problem with a lot of accidents is the salvagers get something wrapped into a ball, give it a scientific pump on a car-o-liner and pass it off as 'light damage easy repair'.
So you really need evidence of before & after that it really IS only a light repair.
I suppose now the cars are so cheap, it takes a stone chip to write them off.

I bought a mint EG Civic as a Cat C about 10 years ago because the rear screen had been smashed. £40 later after a trip to the scrappies - job done!
All my daily drives have generally been Cat C or D. Current Octavia is. Needed a wing repair!

Never had a cat repaired car but my mate has, I'd be more comfortable with a cat D, unfortunately though there are some shoddy repairs when look behind panels etc in one instance I seen a fuse box just taped up with duck tape and things stuck on with tie wraps.
