Default CAI - what is it all about

Can someone explain in simple terms what the CAI does for sound / performance, how much they cost and if there is a recognised 'best' buy.

I want a little more sound but don't want the full on Sports Exhaust. From just reading a previous post in follow up to my 'how do you take the airbox off' all I can work out is that they give you a much better sound without performance decrease.

How much improved is the sound ? Is it worth doing and can you get it fitted somewhere?

Thanks

You`ve pretty much got it there.

AUS CAI or equiv provides cooler airflow in summer. No sound change.

The others provide mixtures of soundchange and airflow change, which can result in perfomance (minimal) change.

Lotusman

Have a look at this thread, you my not need to get a CAI if you follow Brians suggestion.

Not quite correct - most of the effect is pulling in ambient air, rather than radiator exhaust. Most of the heat from the is coming from the radiator exhaust. The effects are more noticable during the summer because the ambient air temp's higher, but the purpose is to get ambient temperature air (or as close to it as possible) all year round.

Minimal gains on their own, but if you start doing more major mods to the engine, the right intake can help with further gains.

Brian
have you got any experience on the K+N Air charger I`m going on about on another thread.....

I`m def going for it as it is free and if I don`t like it, it can come off and I`ll go back to the AUS solution.

Just wondered if you used/tried/seen in the flesh.

Nope. Only way to find out how well it works is to grab the ECU's IAT data with it on. I'm not convinced that it will get enough ambient air from the headlight area. But no way to tell without testing it.

My Aus AIE did change to sound slightly - more rorty. I also use a K&N permanent filter, so the combination may account for the subtle noise change.

I guess that an i/f to the ecu to extract the data is needed. Do any of us on here have that capability? Biker1 or yourself maybe. Would be very interesting to see the stats. Well I`m going for it anyhow and if its possible to gain the data, great. Then at least it`ll have achieved something, even if the something is `don`t bother!`

with the CornerHog.

I also run an Aus AIE, and I fitted my K&N filter last weekend (with the able assistance of my glamorous assistant Jennifer) - it did seem to change the noise a little bit. Nothing major, but as CCHTR says, subtlely different.
