Default Changed to 10w40...

Hi guys,

I changed my oil two months ago to 5w40 fully synthetic and the engine when warm generally sounded a bit more noisey at operating temp.

I did some searching and found a few threads suggesting 10w40 as long as it was SL / A3 rated... So I went to halfords and bought some mobil super 2000 and now the car is much quieter and my TCT makes no noise at all.

Anyone any ideas why? I don't want to mask a underlying issue but this seems to have sorted everything.

Cheers

Surprised if it's not doing it from warm, as both oils should be the same viscosity at operating temps.

I could understand if it had quitened down from cold, as your 10w has a higher viscosity than 5w from cold, which may mask it.

I would say thats its quite due to being fresh oil, give it a couple of weeks and it could return.

The same thing used to happen to me when using mobil 1, use the trusted castrol edge TD imo

Thanks to my car burning through 5 litres of Mobil 1 0w40 in like 5 months, I am on the hunt for oil. Like Rob I am thinking 10w40 would probably be better, but can't find Castrol Edge 10w40 anywhere on Halfords or Opie. Where did everyone get theirs from?

Thanks,

Graham

Edit: Just found the oil grade poll and it would appear the favoured option is 5w40 Castrol Edge TD, this is easily available! Is this OK?

What's the OEM standard stuff - that's what is in mine and it uses nothing and runs nice and quietly.

04 engine though, UF

I've never used a 0W on any car i've owned, given we don't live in the arctic.

yeh I know Mark, you live and learn! What can I say, Opie were doing an offer and it was cheap! Now I know that it was a mistake, no need to rub salt into the wound! Haha!

The car was running on 5w30 when I got it, but looking in the manual (probably should have done this first!) it looks like the temps we are used to 5w30 and 5w40 would be fine, so given most people run 5w40 it seems the thicker viscosity is better, right?

God I hate buying oil, it is bad enough at work, let alone doing it at home! The fact I made a mistake when I am ordering oil all the time just makes things worse!

Would like to see what oil temps get to under 'normal' thrashing use - wonder if the 0 and 5 stuff gets just a little too fluid and doesn't give enough oil pressure once warm for the TCT to work properly.

I don't think 0w is wrong, just not my personal choice

Stick to a top named 5w40 semi or full synthetic and you won't go too far wrong.
